Peggy, an andover resident recently emailed SRWA:
“I was hoping you might remove a tire that is clearly exposed where the river flows between the upper and lower (the oval) soccer fields … by the recently named Sacred Hearts reservation. I live on Arundel Street and walk there all the time and I’m so tired of looking at that tire, along with some other junk you will likely find there – square pillow-like things that are caught up in fallen logs and branches.
Thank you very much for your care for our beautiful little river that has brought me so much joy for so many years.”
We viewed the site and responded with a small team of SRWA volunteers, Laurie (Tewksbury), Mike (Andover), Justin (Billerica) and Alice (Andover). Our treasure hunt (well not really treasure except for a bottle with a significant date in the 1950’s when Justin’s parents had wed) included 11 tires, a chair, a bucket, metal sheet, a pillow, a toy boat and much more. After removal from the river, Andover’s Town Manager Andrew Flanagan and Director of Public Works Chris Cronin sent Andover employees to pick up the litter. Coordination between Peggy, the SRWA and the town was easy.
