Kayaking upstream from Andover to Tewksbury from Shawsheen Pines Reservation (Accross from Pfizer on Lowell Junction Road), Barbara and Alice were quickly challenged by a tree blocking the river near the Route 93 overpass. After walking our kayaks through grassy marsh we continued paddling upstream.
This was followed by an easy portage over another tree and we finally turned around at the next more difficult portage.
The river is high. We enjoyed beautiful reflections, blue herons, and several geese but only a single gosling. Upstream paddle lasted about 70 minutes while the downstream float was completed in about 50 minutes. With the help of the current we were able to squeeze around the tree near route 93 at the end of our trip. A wonderful afternoon. We wish we had had branch clippers with us. Enjoy the river!
