River Cleanup in Billerica

As part of Billerica’s cleanup day on May 14th, SRWA will be hosting a paddle along the Billerica stretch starting at Pinehurst Park, and ending at Buckingham Dr. We will meet at 10am at Akeson Park. We will be stopping frequently to remove trash and debris along and in the river. If you wish to participate, please bring your own equipment (canoe or kayak, life vest, paddles,tools and gloves). To receive free trash bags and gloves from the Town, please register for the Billerica cleanup through Billerica’s DPW website, although it is not required to come on the paddle.If you cannot or do not want to paddle, and want to help with the cleanup, you can remove trash from the riverbank and tributaries such as Jones and Webb Brooks. We are also looking for volunteers to help cleanup Sandy Pond off of Shane Lane. You will be required to sign a waiver to participate.

Please join the SRWA for our Annual Meeting on June 8, at the Memorial Hall Library in Andover MA. After a short SRWA business meeting, Matt Burne, the Conservation Director with the Walden Woods Project in Lincoln, MA with give a presentation on the biology of vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands teeming with life and important to healthy ecosystems. Matt has conducted vernal pool research and outreach for many years, and is co-author of a Field Guide to the Animals of Vernal Pools.
